The Fitchburg Veterans Memorial in Gorman Wayside Park commemorates the death of Fitchburg resident Robert J. Schley, the only son of Hazel and Niles Schley, as well as others who served their country.
In 1967, the 23-year-old Marine corporal died in Vietnam. His actions in battle saved the lives of other soldiers and he was posthumanously awarded Purple Heart and the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism.

The Memorial is positioned on a 18-acre public site just north of the old town hall building and Public Works Maintenance Facility on the west side of South Fish Hatchery Road.
The Park contains the veteran’s memorial with a Harry White Horse aluminum sculpture “Weary Warrior”, picnic areas, and landscaping. The park provides a nice view of rural Fitchburg and includes the adjacent 2+ acres of oak savanna, one of Fichburg’s last remaining remnant savannas with many wildflowers and interesting flora. Onsite parking is available. For more information on Gorman Wayside Park, visit http://www.fitchburgwi.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/Gorman-Wayside-Veterans-Memorial-Park-45
